My Role

Cadillac Super Cruise was the collective hard work of numerous talented people and teams working together. My role on this feature was Visual Designer for the graphics and telltales displayed in the 12” digital instrument cluster.

- Below are some of the steps that were taken in the visual design for this feature -

01 | Understanding the Brand and the Customer

03 | Understanding the Competition and Industry Trends

Extensive benchmarking and research was completed on driver assistance displays across the industry to understand visual trends and experience first hand how the competitive features operated.

04 | Understanding Limitations and Technical Constraints

The design solution for the Super Cruise feature needed to fit within an existing production cluster and framework that was already on the road in Cadillac vehicles.

05 | Establishing Goals for the Visual Design

Goal 1 - Clearly Communicate all 5 Super Cruise States to the user so they can be easily understood

Goal 2 - Instill a feeling of safety and confidence in the feature through visual reassurance that the vehicle is recognizing what it needs to.

Goal 3 - Clearly communicate states for all other driver assistance features (lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, set speed, gap setting) as one cohesive unit.

Goal 4 - Communicate the Super Cruise states as both an info page and a persistent simplified form (telltale icons)

06 | Sketching, Testing & Iteration

Multiple rounds of user testing, rapid design iteration and reviews were completed to arrive at a design solution that could be easily understood and would provide visual reassurance for the user. My role as Visual Designer was to generate ideas and provide multiple designs, graphic styles and placements within the cluster for user testing and review.

08 | In Vehicle Testing and Software Validation

Prior to the vehicles release, I participated in multiple rounds of software validation and in-vehicle testing to ensure high quality and proper implementation of the instrument cluster graphics.

09 | Results

Cadillac Super Cruise can be seen on the road today making long highway commutes more comfortable and convenient in the Cadillac CT6 and 2021 Cadillac Escalade. It has been a successful and competitive feature for the company that continues to outperform industry competitors into 2021.
